Student Executive Council (SEC)
The OASC Student Executive Council is a group of 11 high school students elected by member schools to represent their respective region. 1 middle school representative is also appointed to this council to ensure our mid-level voices are being heard. These students serve a one year term from November-November and are elected annually at Fall Conference, working with adult leadership throughout the year to run board meetings, plan events, and be the student voice for OASC.
SEC FAQ’s
-
This is an opportunity to take leadership to the next level. Students wishing to run for Student Executive Council should be self-directed, responsible individuals who follow-through with commitments they make. They must also be very positive role models, since this is a highly visible position throughout the state. SEC members must attend four Board meetings each year (including the preceding SEC retreat), OASC Fall and Spring Conferences, and must attend OASC Summer Camp. Other commitments include membership outreach, OASC newsletter contributions, helping out at regional workshops in your area, and frequent communication with members of the Board. If you are chosen to run for a position at Fall Conference, you, your leadership adviser, and leadership students at your school are required to attend Fall Conference to help support your campaign.
-
8th Graders, Sophomores or Juniors currently attending an OASC member school. Student Executive Council members have full voting privileges, and serve a term of one year. If they are elected as 8th graders or Sophomores, they have the option of running for more than 1 term in the same or a different office. Students running for State President must be juniors.

Please note as stated in the OASC constitution: “A student on the OASC Student Executive Council shall serve a one year term. They will be elected at Fall Conference, take office immediately, and serve until the following Fall Conference.”
Council Recognition Awards
Our council recognition awards program offers advisors and students an opportunity to be recognized for their hard work throughout the year. The intentions of the OASC High School Council Awards are 3-fold: To be a goal setting and planning tool for advisers and student leaders as they outline their programming and curriculum for the year; To be used as an evaluation tool throughout the year to help you see what you’ve accomplished and stay focused on what you are striving for, and; A method whereby OASC can recognize member schools within the state. The intentions of the OASC Mid-Level Student Leaders Awards are 3-fold: To be a goal setting and planning tool for advisers and student leaders as they outline their programming and curriculum for the year; To be used as an evaluation tool throughout the year to help you see what you’ve accomplished and stay focused on what you are striving for, and; A method whereby OASC can recognize member schools within the state.
Capitol Ambassadors Program (CAP)
The OASC Capitol Ambassadors Program is an innovative, first-of-its-kind program that engages high school students in politics and public policy. This is an exciting opportunity for high school student leaders across Oregon to gain firsthand experience, connect with other student leaders, and develop real-world skills. OASC CAP is perfect for any student passionate about making a difference and interested in becoming a stronger leader.
The year-long program will introduce students to the state legislature and connect them with other students, elected leaders, and public officials from all over the state. There will be field trips, webinars, workshops, and more. Over the last six years, CAP students visited the State Capitol, met with Governor Brown and leaders of the Department of Education, interviewed legislators, learned how to build compelling resumes and cover letters, and testified before the House Education Committee on the student perspective in education policy.
We will select a group of 30 to 40 students to be members of the seventh class of OASC Capitol Ambassadors Program; we are looking for high school students of all ages, from all over Oregon, and with all kinds of backgrounds and interests. They will represent OASC and their peers from across the state. New and returning students are welcome to apply. This program is completely non-partisan and students of all belief systems are welcome.
Advisor & Educator Programs
Advisor of the Year
An effective student council or leadership group can be one of the most valuable assets any school can have. Behind every effective student council or leadership group is a dedicated advisor who guides and empowers students. These advisors are some of the hardest working people in your school.
How do they get nominated? An advisor may be nominated by their principal, their students, or an advisor from another school. Please complete the enclosed nomination form, along with appropriate letters of recommendation, in a Google Doc or in PDF format to miles@oasc.org no later than Friday, April 7th 2023.
How will they be recognized? The OASC Adviser of the Year will be recognized at the Annual Spring Conference and again at our Annual Fall Conference. They will also receive a plaque and (2) $75 OASC event scholarships for their school. A media press release will be provided for your school district to recognize the Adviser of the Year on a local level as well.
What criteria must they meet? In order to be nominated for OASC Adviser of the Year, the candidate’s school must be a member of Oregon Association of Student Councils (OASC). There is no minimum service requirement to an ASB/Leadership/Program advisor position. Current OASC Board members are not eligible.
OASC Membership
OASC provides two adviser leadership institutes throughout the year, one in the Fall and another during one of our two HS Summer Camp Sessions. These institutes provide adult leaders, advisers and teachers of leadership an interactive experience to learn new techniques, network with educators from across the state, develop leadership lessons, and acquire the tools necessary to be successful in their journey as an adviser and/or teacher of leadership.
At the June 2021 OASC Board meeting, new membership dues were approved for our High School and Middle School members, $225/year and $150/year respectively. The Board approved this increase in dues taking into account: expansion of who at your school (students and advisers) can benefit from OASC programs and resources, lack of due increases in past years, increase in partnered opportunities, and investing in the emphasis on culturally responsive and in the moment programming and support systems.
OASC recognizes the budgetary restrictions some programs may have and are happy to talk through funding opportunities, two of which we recommend being the Student Investment Account and Measure 98 funds. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to Cameron Broome at cameron@oasc.org.
Alumni Programs
Adult Board
We have 14 appointed adults, 10 elected high school students and 1 appointed middle school students who serve as the OASC Executive Board. Of those 14 adult board members, they are secondary school teachers/advisors, administrators, and/or alumni who are involved in activities. The terms are 3 years and there are 4 mandatory board meetings a year. This is a working board and we ask for active participation and support to help run events and keep OASC thriving!
Volunteer Opportunities
