About our Speaker: Justin Coffey, MD
Dr. Justin Coffey is by training a neuropsychiatrist, by instinct a leader, by inspiration a medical educator, by interest a student of quality improvement and health care delivery, by rearing a family man, and by nature someone who performs best in thoughtful conversation with others.
Dr. Coffey currently serves as Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the Menninger Clinic, where he is also Medical Director of the Menninger Center for Brain Stimulation. He holds the rank of Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Division of Neuropsychiatry) at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He was recruited to Houston in 2015.
Dr. Coffey attended the University of Chicago from 1998-2002 as a College Honors Scholar, earning a bachelor’s degree with honors (History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine) and graduating summa cum laude. He remained at the University of Chicago as an Early Acceptance Scholar, receiving a medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine in 2006. He then completed residency training in psychiatry in 2010 at the University of Michigan, where he also served as chief resident and as a Leadership Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
From 2010-2015, Dr. Coffey served as Medical Director of the Center for Brain Stimulation Therapies at Henry Ford Hospital and as Chief of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry for Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI. In this role, he led the spread of Perfect Depression Care, an internationally acclaimed initiative to eliminate suicide, into primary care and other general medical settings. Recognized as an up-and-coming health care leader, Dr. Coffey was appointed to the Advanced Leadership Academy at Henry Ford Health System. He was then appointed the Director of Project Helios for Behavioral Health Services, a role in which he led the implementation of an integrated, electronic, clinical information platform across Henry Ford Health System’s entire behavioral health care enterprise.
Dr. Coffey’s innovative application of health technology as a leadership tool brought him to the Menninger Clinic as the organization’s first Chief Information Officer. He leads all of the information technology, clinical informatics, health information management, and information security, as well as the implementation of the Clinic’s first electronic health record.
Dr. Coffey is a gifted physician who is board certified in both psychiatry and in behavioral neurology/neuropsychiatry. He founded and directs the Menninger Center for Brain Stimulation, which has been recognized as a Best Practice by the Joint Commission for his innovative work in family-centered care. Dr. Coffey has been recognized as a Top Doc by multiple local and national organizations. He serves on the editorial board of multiple scientific journals and has made important scientific contributions to the fields of neuropsychiatry, brain stimulation, suicide, and health technology.
Dr. Coffey lives in Houston with his wife Kelly and their daughter Quinn.
