Featuring Speaker: Tom Heethuis

Tom has been involved in advising student activities for more than 40 years. He has been a student council advisor, activity director, leadership camp director and building principal.  He was active in developing a league activity organization and in the growth of the Michigan Association of Student Councils. He has hosted several league, regional, state and national activity advisor workshops.  Tom has presented at all twenty-three Michigan Advisor Conferences and developed the curriculum framework used at the Michigan Summer Leadership Camp. Tom has served on the national executive boards of the National Association of Student Councils, the National Association of Student Activity Advisors and the National Association of Workshop Directors. He has the Regional IV Warren E Shull Student Council Advisor of the Year in 1993 and was selected as the Region IV Earl Reum Advisor Trainer of the Year in 2000 and 2012.  Tom has conducted advisor workshops at NASC, SASC, NASAA and NAWD conferences; and State Advisor Workshops in Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Virginia and Connecticut.  He has been a presenter at the Canadian Student Leadership Conferences in British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island. Tom’s background as a leadership training practitioner give his workshops an emphasis on hands-on, practical leadership activities that participants can take back to their schools and use with their students as soon as they return.  In 2012 Tom was recognized as the MASC/MAHS Principal of the Year and was honored as the first inductee into the MASC/MAHS Student Leadership Hall of Fame.  He is currently working with the organization as their Advisor Liaison and Training Facilitator and with the National Honor Society as a Summit Conference Faculty Member.
