In just one week, OASC member schools will elect it’s Student Executive Council at Fall Conference 2017 in Seaside, Oregon.
The process to apply and be selected to campaign for a spot on the Student Executive Council is ambitious. Not only does it take a strong, involved leader in their own schools and communities, but a positive role model who is an example of the OASC Motto; Act. Serve. Lead. The OASC Executive Board consists of 21 members where the Student Executive Council are the majority.
Students on the Executive Board represent Oregon student leaders as they help plan conferences, give input on curriculum, and discuss necessary improvements to our organization as we strive for inclusivity. The following students were chosen to campaign at Fall Conference for a spot on the Student Executive Council.
Grants Pass High School, 11th Grade | Southern Region
Hello OASC! My name is Shelby Bowen and I’m a junior at Grants Pass High School. As my Instagram bio says I am a lover of life and food, and can’t help but get giddy around cute doggos.
I began participating in leadership during my seventh grade year, and it was the best decision I could have ever made. It has given me so many opportunities to grow; not only a leader, but also as a person. I am very passionate about OASC and all that it has to offer. It gives me a sense of belonging and drives me to become more involved in my school and community.
In 2015, I had the opportunity to be a part of the SEC as a mid-level rep. I was able to experience how much work and dedication it takes to do the job, however, I also know that the process and end result is certainly worth the work. The SEC creates a widespread, common bond between everyone that participates, and other leadership students alike. There is no better feeling than working with the people I love and appreciate to create opportunities for others to do the same. I want to be a part of creating that same joy and contentment for many others that attend our conferences.
My goal will be to work together with the SEC to spread the OASC love that we all know and love so much. I want everyone to have the opportunity to experience what has impacted my life so much.

Sandy High School, 11th Grade | Metro Region
Being the President of OASC has been my dream since I first stepped foot into Fall Conference 2015. The electricity of it all, the laughter, friends, cheer and general kindness really created an atmosphere I got addicted to. I was a shell of who I am now, because the love, kindness, and compassion shown to me has changed me forever. Smiles have become a constant in my life, and my constant goal is to make everyone else smile. That’s why I want to be the president of OASC, to spread the cheer and love and everything that I’ve been a part of and have felt.The family that OASC is, has helped me change into what I see OASC as. I aim to embody the characteristics of OASC- the duty to act, serve, and lead. The ability to love unconditionally, show compassion, and never treat anyone with anything but kindness. I want this to be a constant goal for everyone in OASC, something that is feasible because they have felt these emotions first hand. As president, I will ensure that everybody that comes into OASC makes their own story, finds a new family, and leaves as a much happier and more loving person.
Sherwood High School, 11th Grade | Metro Region
I want to be OASC State President because OASC has no doubt been the most positive experience in my life. At OASC I learned that no leader is made alone, and anyone can become a leader if they are surrounded by supportive people. I think that OASC needs a leader that is able to connect with all sort of different people. Through my leadership experience I’ve gone from being the quietest kid in class to the most outgoing leader you will ever know, because of this I can relate to all different students. I am applying for state president specifically because I have been my class vice president the past four years and the president this year so my area of expertise is definitely in leading groups of other leaders. I know that leaders need lots of encouragement and I strongly believe in being just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. Our OASC students need a leader who is able to understand and encourage them. Student council is my life and this position is my number one priority so I will put my all into every single day of it. CENTRAL REGION CANDIDATE
Ridgeview HS, 10th Grade
Last year I attended Fall Conference as a freshman and I immediately fell in love with the environment at OASC. During fall conference I listened to all the candidate’s presenting their election statements and I knew that I wanted to get more involved. Since then I have been applying the leadership skills that I learned at OASC through the different workshops I attended and also by listening to the different guest speakers that were at Fall Conference. My school has a very strong leadership program, but as a school we do not have the best reputation. I believe that being Central Representative will instill a new mindset to those in my school that think they can not make a difference. Seeing someone who is involved in numerous activities like myself will allow others to create new ideas and inspire them to be their best selves. This can apply to not only my school, but to the many others that are apart of Central Region. During the summer I went to the OASC leadership camp where I saw and experienced the magic that OASC has brought to so many lives in people my age. After Fall Conference running for SEC was just a thought in the back of my head, but leaving summer camp I made it a goal to help everyone I meet experience the amazing feeling that I had at camp through my leadership skills. I believe that by being the Central Representative, I can not only be apart of the magic that OASC has to offer, but I can also help spread this feeling to others as well.
NORTHWEST REGION CANDIDATES
Clatskanie High School, 10th Grade
My freshman year I was elected Freshman Class President, that lead me to OASC. I instantly fell in love, so I attended Fall Conference, Winter Energizer, Spring Conference and Summer Camp Session 1. When asked to think about running for the SEC, I was overjoyed. The more I thought about the opportunity for me to become more involved with OASC the more excited I am about this association.For me OASC has been absolutely life changing, without it I definitely would not be who I am today. The experience is something that I wish everyone could experience sometime throughout their high school years. This is why I would like to represent the Northwest region, because I want to make my fantastic region even better. Getting more schools involved and excited every year for OASC is my main goal. I know if more schools experience the magic of OASC it would be a life changing for them too.
Tillamook High School, 10th Grade
In the summer of 2014 I arrived at OASC Summer Leadership Camp for my very first time. I was not exactly one to go to camps or try things such as this and in my small seventh grade mind I was scared beyond belief. Upon arrival everything seemed so different to what my mind had made it out to be and I had immediately fallen in love with every little aspect of the magical environment encased within the people surrounding me. I couldn’t help but return each year since.Since the very first moment I had attended OASC I grew a love for not only the way it had made me expand myself as a leader through classes, workshops, and activities, but I had fallen in love with everyone around me. I aspired to be just like them. As time has passed I’ve become more aware that I never have really gotten the chance to work so in depth to give something back to others that I care so deeply about. In running for SEC this is exactly what I want to do. My goal is to share this feeling and hopefully grow a love for leadership within another person just as the people of OASC and everyone involved has done for me.
SOUTHERN REGION CANDIDATE
Henley High School, 10th Grade
I attended the NASC conference in June and I fell in love with the association. That trip was my first time flying, first time away from my family, first time on the east coast, and first time at a Redsox game. OASC brings me to try new things, go new places, meet new people, and for that I am so incredibly great full. Because OASC has given me so much I want to give back to them and be a bigger part in this association. I want to be surrounded by my OASC family more often. I have always been loud and out going and could never find the place where people didn’t find it annoying and actually enjoyed my enthusiasm for life, but now I am here applying to be in a place where I share my joy. OASC is my second home and my sense of belonging.
MIDWEST REGION CANDIDATES
Santiam Jr./Sr. HS, 11th Grade
In August of 2015, I was swept into a world unlike any I had ever known before. Confused, I walked into what turned out to be the best week of my life. A week full of fun and ever-lasting friendship. Where else would you find an ecstatic atmosphere like the one OASC brings? My life was forever changed by my OASC experience thus far, and I want to do all I can to make that impact for others in OASC. I think I have a copious amount of qualities that would make me fit to be on the student executive council. One main reason I am running to be on the student executive council is to represent the small schools not only in my region, but also all over Oregon. It seems that the majority of people involved in OASC are from big schools, and the population of small school OASC-goers is tremendously outnumbered. I’d like to bring small school issues into the spotlight as well as big school issues. I think that when it comes to school leadership, small schools have a lot of tactics to learn from big schools, while big schools have a lot to learn from small schools respectively. To be on the student executive council would allow me to discuss issues going on within the school systems, and make resolutions to resolve these concerns. I want to be apart of the student executive council because I can bring unique ideas and be apart of a positive change to the school atmosphere. I believe I would benefit from the council as much as the council could benefit from me. I have already had so many great opportunities from OASC, and I hope that serving OASC on the student executive council could be my next big adventure.
Thurston High School, 11th Grade
I am applying for the position of Regional Representative. I decided to apply for this position after the amazing experience I had at camp this last summer. By going to camp, I realized that I want to be more involved with student government and I want to do more to help others. I have a passion for helping people and I believe that by being apart of the SEC I could accomplish this passion of mine! I would love to be a Regional Representative because I want to do more not just for my school, but also for my community and our beautiful state.
Perrydale HS, 11th Grade
Since I was in sixth grade I have been attending OASC conferences and events. I remember my first time at spring conference and I looked up at the stage during the first general session. On that stage was the student executive council, and when I saw what they were doing to help student leaders all over Oregon to gain leadership skills, that is when I knew that I wanted to be a part of the SEC Council.
I applied to apart of the Student Executive Council for OASC because I want to inspire other student leaders just like the retired SEC Council members have inspired me. Secondly, I want to inspire the smaller schools to become more involved in OASC. I also want to help the smaller schools get more resources to help expand their leadership programs. Lastly, I want to help schools become involved in their communities and volunteer activities. I believe in servant leadership and that we should give back to the people who help us and we should help out the people who nee help.
I’ve learned that at OASC you can be yourself without having to worry about others making fun of you. I want to be someone who can make a difference in somebody else’s life and inspire them to not only be themselves but to also go after their dreams.
METRO REGION CANDIDATES
Shawna Ashley Ingram
Hillsboro High School, 11th Grade
Hello, my name is Shawna Ashley Ingram and I am eager to be running for OASC SEC’s President. I am running for this position because OASC has always been the one place I can truly be myself and I want to work to spread this experience to other students throughout the state of Oregon. OASC has also taught me how to be a servant leader and how to lead by example. I take OASC’s motto of “Act. Serve. Lead.” very seriously and I implement this motto into everything I do. I am extremely grateful for what OASC has taught me and I want to make sure everyone has this opportunity to learn and grow as a leader as much as I have.
I am very lucky to attend an OASC member school and for the opportunity that I have been given to attend OASC events however, I know that other people aren’t given these chances to grow as a leader due to lack of exposure to OASC or due to financial needs. I want to be on SEC to work on outreach and working with advisors to first of all, tell students about camp and about how life changing the experience is; and secondly, work to add more financial opportunities to go to OASC by expanding the “Friends of OASC” program. I plan on doing this by reaching out OASC alumni and also local businesses throughout the state to support this program and the student leaders depending on the scholarships the program provides. My desire to be in this program stems from my desire to give back to this program that has given so much to me and work to expand this program so other student leaders can benefit from this life change experience.
Cleveland High School, 11th Grade
My name is Mia Johnson and I am currently a junior at Cleveland High School in southeast Portland. It feels so weird to say that I’m a junior already and even crazier to think that the first time I discovered OASC was two years ago. I came to fall conference my freshman year and I can easily say it was the best thing I could’ve done to start off high school. After that first event I was hooked and have gone to every event I could since then; and if you’ve been to even one OASC event before it’s not hard to see why.
This place is special to say the least and extends far beyond just learning leadership skills. Going to any OASC event is fun and exciting every single time. There’s no place quite the same. I never would’ve thought at the beginning of my freshman year that I would make lasting friendships in only three days, openly cry, laugh and dance in front of strangers, or even travel to a foreign country with people I have never met to help build a school and even be forced to zipline above the trees, (helping me learn that heights are one of my biggest fears). There’s a sense of connection here that I hadn’t felt before that first conference, but now am constantly on the lookout for. I want to be on SEC because of all of these things. OASC is the place I feel most myself and most at home and I’ll take as much of that as I can get. I want to try to give back the good that OASC has made me feel because everyone deserves to know what that feels like.
Mountainside High School, 10th Grade
For most, the happiest place on earth is Disneyland; for me, it’s OASC. My name is Sal and I’m running for the metro representative position. Throughout my entire high school experience, I have had one lasting goal: leaving a smile on the face of every person I interact with. In many ways I feel like OASC completes that goal. Although I have only been attending OASC events for a year, the impact it has had on my life has been incredible. My first memories started with the biggest of smiles and the tightest hugs.”We don’t shake hands at OASC, we hug it out.” I walked away from this year’s summer camp with 50 new best friends. These moments I’ve experienced are ones that I think everyone deserves to live through as well. That is why as a Metro rep I would try to spread positivity, love, and a willingness to say yes to challenges across the metro region. I would encourage other schools to accept the challenge of attending event such as fall conference and summer camp. OASC has never failed at encouraging me to keep smiling, and I want to do the same as Metro representative.
Tualatin High School, 10th Grade
Hello, my name is Sophie Wong and I am currently a sophomore at Tualatin High School. I have been involved in some sort of leadership class for the past 6 years, and I am humbled to accept that it takes over a majority of my life. I am also the treasurer in my ASB class, and greatly involved in our school. When I was first introduced to OASC in 7th grade at spring conference, I fell in love with the culture, experience, and relationships that are created at all OASC events. I was ecstatic to apply for the mid-level position, which quickly became the best decision I have ever made. My mindset was altered completely, and I finally understood my love for leadership. Being behind the scenes and creating what I know hundreds of people love is a privilege and makes me beyond happy! I am forever thankful for all of the experiences that OASC has given me and I want to do everything I can to give back. It feels so good to make positive changes like, picking great keynote speakers, reaching out to new schools, or even altering the way we connect with each other as leaders. I would love to experience what it’s like on the SEC as a regional representative and I’d love to share all of my ideas with the board:)
EASTERN REGION CANDIDATES
Isel Tejeda Urenda
Hermiston High School, 11th Grade
I am applying for the position of OASC Eastern Oregon Regional Representative because I would like to help my region further expand its membership in the association. The OASC is a proactive leadership development program that has truly impacted the infrastructure of student councils in the Hermiston School District. I have had the pleasure of taking an active role in my District’s student councils since the 5th grade. As a result, I have seen and been apart of the evolution of our student councils. I would love for other districts in the Eastern Oregon Region to have the ability to experience not only the high energy OASC conferences, but for them to be able to apply these experiences and form stronger, more driven student councils.
Driven student councils are what make a whole world of a difference, anyone can tell you that, but the OASC has taught me that we should strive to be servant leaders. The idea behind being a servant leader is without a doubt one of the most valuable things I have learned from this association. Being a servant leader promotes selflessness and benevolence. These characteristics are important to me because I believe they are representative of how every leadership member should feel towards their community and school. When I first received the opportunity to join leadership I did so with altruism, thinking it would be a good way to give back and encourage my peers to be more involved. Overall I have not once regretted my decision to join my school’s leadership program and I hope that I will be able to serve as the OASC Eastern Oregon Regional Representative.
La Grande High School, 11th Grade
I never thought I would be a leadership kid. One of my teachers in middle school recommended me for student government at my high school. I wanted nothing to do with student government, but my parents forced me into it. At the time, I resented them, but in just a couple of weeks I would come to thank them. That year, my first year of student government, my adviser would introduce me to something so life changing I would have no idea how to handle it. That thing was OASC, something that would become my second home. He told all of the Leadership students that there would be a mini leadership camp and I signed up thinking that my fellow freshmen officers would sign up too, but they didn’t. With this being my first OASC event, I was pretty scared and I got pretty nervous about being forced to go. I would talk about having to spend the weekend with complete strangers that I have never met. Pre-OASC me thought that sounded like the worst time ever. But to my surprise, it was probably one of the best times of my life. At Winter Energizer, I saw members of the SEC and I was star stuck. I thought that this is what true leadership was, the way they were inclusive to everyone there. That was when I decided I wanted to be a part of SEC. I wanted to be just like them and make both old and new members of OASC feel that way they made me feel. So, here I am today, running for Eastern Representative. So please, vote for me!
My name is Tracie Mae and I work for Thirst Project. We are a non-profit that builds freshwater wells in developing countries through the education and activation of STUDENTS! Collectively our students have raised over $8 million in 8 years making us the world’s largest youth water organization. Due to some unforeseen challenges we had to make some changes to the upcoming OASC Polar Plunge at Fall Conference. We are not allowed to Plunge into the ocean for safety reasons, but don’t worry, we’ve come up with a fun alternative! Instead, we will be having the OASC Polar Challenge! This will consist of a short obstacle course on the beach (easy obstacles, but you’ll still have to do them in the freezing cold, so it will be challenging) and then a polar dip into small 3 ft deep pool, provided to us by the Seaside Fire Department. We are super bummed that we aren’t able to have an actual Plunge in the ocean, but sometimes life throws you curve balls and you just have to find alternative solutions and move forward! Each participant must raise a minimum of $25 for the privilege of taking a chilly dip into the Pacific Ocean. All challengersers will receive a Polar Challange t-shirt and bragging rights!
Proceeds will help support Unified Sports and other Special Olympics programs in Oregon schools that create more accepting school communities and provide sports and leadership opportunities for all students.
The Challange will take place on Monday, November 9th at 7:30am at Seaside Beach.
